Today is the Fashion Friday motherload. I realized I’ve been spitting all these fashionable items at you but give you no reference as to where I find them. I like to think of these places as my online shopping secrets…but my blog readers are my friends and friends share. So today I’m giving away all my secrets! Look out!

First let me start off by saying I have a champagne taste with a beer budget. I want all things Michael Kors in my life but let’s be honest…my bank account does not support that. So I have found places that allow me to enjoy the beautiful things I love without breaking the bank.

These next 2 places are great because they send you daily emails telling you what they are featuring for that day.  And you can look and see what is coming up.  You have to sign up (it’s free you just have to give your email) and then you can get total steals on designer items.  They have all kinds of things from clothes to electronics to getaways to skincare.  Love them!

Hautelook

Ideeli

Another great place is 6pm.com They are a little more expensive but their selection is huge and you can usually find some great deals.  I usually shop this site if I’m looking for something for a special occasion.

My two all time favorite sites are modcloth.com and lulus.com.  You can get the CUTEST dresses for SO cheap.  They always have really unique stuff that I just can’t get enough of.  I definitely recommend checking them out!

And last but not least.  The one that is no secret at all…Forever 21. I know it’s not the highest quality of clothing but you can guarantee you will find something you like when shopping there.  Let’s face it, as much as style changes, you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on trendy items.  Enter: Forever 21.  Trendy and affordable.

Happy Fashion Friday!  Gary and I are off to a weekend of tobogganing!

“What am I going to wear?”  That is always the first question on my mind whenever an event pops up.  As a wedding photographer, that question takes on a whole new meaning.  You not only have to dress for the occasion, you have to be able to move freely to do your job and at the same time be representing your brand.  It’s a lot to think about when planning an outfit.   The guests, bridal party, and family are going to be looking at you all day long.  They paid for you to be a part of their big day and if you show up in a pair of jeans and t-shirt, you are basically saying I am sloppy which means my brand is sloppy and my picutres and attitude will most likely be sloppy.  When you show up put together and with that added little bit of oomph, they will look at you and see the reason they booked you in the first place.  I know the common saying…don’t judge a book by it’s cover.  But as a photographer, I strongly believe that not to be true.  As photographers, we are selling ourselves.  We are the product….therefore we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard so we can be the best product we can be…and therefore give our clients the best experience possible.

So today on Fashion Friday I am going to be talking about dressing to shoot a wedding.  At least my take on it…

A suit.  If you don’t have one…just go out and bite the bullet.  Opt for something with a lot of stretch in it so you can move around and won’t be restricted.  A suit is a great way to look perfectly professional and totally stylish at the same time.

Dresses.  I know some of you are thinking I’m crazy to suggest the idea of shooting a wedding in a dress.  But I promise I’ve done it and it is VERY possible.  I know dresses aren’t for everyone, but I love them and actually prefer shooting weddings in them.  Mainly because I believe they reflect who I am and therefore reflect my brand.

Black is always the go-to color for photographers.  And rightfully so seeing as we want to blend in instead of stand out.  But there’s no reason you can’ add a little flare to the every day black dress.

A great pair of black pants.  Enough said.

Shoes.  Shoes are, in my opinion, one of the most important things to consider.  You are on your feet ALL day carrying very heavy equipment and that can be a killer on your feet.  I love fierce 4 inch heels like the next girl…but there is no place for those at a wedding.  I suggest a low wedge or flats.  shoes

And now making the second appearance on Fashion Friday…my Michael Kors watch!! (enter applause from my make-believe audience)   1.  Because I have an unhealthy obsession with it and 2. Because nothing is more important than keeping time on a wedding day.

Happy Fashion Friday!  Anyone have any fashionable plans for the weekend?? (And yes…staying home and being a couch potato all weekend is very fashionable)  🙂

Spoken by a true professional! Lauren, I could not agree with you more. Whether it’s right or not, many people look at how someone is dressed as part of a first impression. I was taught at an early age that no matter what your career, job you’re interviewing for occasion you’re attending, it is important to take pride in your appearance.ReplyCancel

I love the black dresses – and the shorter black pants and the black shoes. I think I just love black

The question I get most often from clients is…”What should we wear?”  My first response is always what you feel comfortable and fabulous in.  But sometimes that isn’t quite enough info.  So today on Fashion Friday I am going to be talking about, in my opinion, what outfits make for the best photos.  Now, this is just my opinion…and every couple or family has their own style…but these are my favs.

Every girl out there secretly wants Carrie Bradshaw’s closet and more specifically her shoe collection.  So when you get your photos taken there is no better way to feel like a million bucks than with a pair of some fierce shoes.

Fierce Shoes

I live in dresses.  But I also think when a girl puts on a dress it makes her feel beautiful.  And if you feel beautiful it shows in your photos.  I think it’s important to feel comfortable but there’s no reason you can’t be comfortable in something fabulous.

Fabulous Dresses

Two words.  White jeans.  They are insanely flattering and look AWESOME in pictures.  And for the guys…just denim in general.  I love denim in black and white photos.

Denim

I’m also a sucker for plaid.  I love when guys wear plaid in photos because the pattern makes for really interesting photos.  Especially in black and white.   It gives them that extra pop.  Ladies..if yous man in wearing plaid..opt for solid colors so your photos don’t have too much going on.

Plaid Shirts

Here are a few examples of outfits my clients have worn in the past that I think worked really well together…

Happy Fashion Friday!  I hope everyone has a great Valentine’s Day weekend!

    hey lauren!
your blog posts are way to cute! Love them and your photos as well 🙂

Just a little tip, the second to last photo, all of your subjects are squinting. You can prevent this from putting them in the shade and photographinng! It’s always the best lighting 🙂 Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

I am really starting to love Fashion Friday.  It gives me an excuse to online shop without any negative effect on my bank account!  🙂  Today on Fashion Friday we will be staying on the theme of the last few days…this blistery, winter blizzard.  I love the winter…I love snow and Christmas and boots and scarves…and all of the above.  But one thing that comes along with winter that I do not like is the dullness.  As my tan fades and and my skin starts to turn translucent I begint daydreaming about summer.  But it is inevitable that for at least 5 months out of the year I am going to feel dull.  So these are my little quick fixes and super top secret tricks that I use to try and stay as fresh as possible during this incredibly dull season…

Bare Minerals is my all time favorite make up line.  I used to use ALL their products but now I use mostly just eyeshadows.  My two favorites are ‘Vanilla Sugar‘ and ‘Queen Phyllis‘.  They look alike in the picutres below but they are very different.    I also love all their bold colors.  I use them as eyeliners and they work fabulously!

eyeshadow

I discovered Nars when I had my make-up done for a charity event last year.  It is amazing!  I use their bronzer and blush everyday.  It has little illiminaters in it that makes even the palest, dullest skin look sunkissed and dewy!  I also use an illuminator…which is the icing on the cake!

face

Hair…that’s one of winter’s worst victims.  Take it from someone who seriously colors her hair…the winter kills my dye job.  I use color care shampoo, Biolage is my favorite because it smells delightful, but I still can’t stand how dull my strands are.  Fekkai Salon Glaze adds that extra shine that the wintery weather steals from me.  I highly recommend it!

hair

Runner up next to hair is lips.  I don’t know about you, but chapped lips are my worst enemy.  Seriously.  I have chapstick in my coat pocket, in my purse, in my car, at my desk, in my bathroom, by my bed…you get the idea.  My newly discovered favorite chapstick is Nivea – A Kiss of Milk and Honey.  Works like a charm and it tastes scrumptious.  And there’s no better way to brighten up a gloomy winter day than with some bright lip colors.  Red lip stain…yes please!  And of course…because I not so secretly model my life after a Michael Kors ad…some Micheal Kors lip gloss!

lips

A trick I learned when the Nars lady did my makeup was to combine mascaras.  You use a volumizing mascara and a lengthening mascara for some seriously killer lashes.  mascara

I absolutely LOVE these scents by Jessica Simpson.  I know it’s Jessica Simpson…but I swear they smell amazing.  Very fresh and summery.

perfume

I use lotion like an addict.  I mean I slather it on.  I’m pretty sure I’m immune to it by now.  My favorite face lotion is Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. It makes your face so soft.  And since body lotion no longer helps me…I always use a sugar scrub in the shower.  It really does do wonders.

This post has gone on WAY too long…I apologize.  But hopefully you can use some of these tips to fight the winter dullness.  Happy Fashion Friday!

Interesting mascara tip! Does it matter which mascara is put on first?ReplyCancel

    • laurenwakefield - February 9, 2011 - 3:01 pm

I don’t think it matters…but if I remember correctly the lady that did my makeup put the lengthening on first. 🙂ReplyCancel

Fashion Friday is evolving.  To be honest…I think of fashion as a way of life…not just an outfit.  When I think of being fashionable…I think of an awesome pair of boots, a great nail polish color, a cozy mug to drink my coffee in and silky sheets to slide into at night.  Something on my mind a lot right now is my home office.  Mostly because I don’t have one.  I have a laptop…and a couch…and that’s about it.  Which is just fine for the time being.  But I’ve been sort of day (and night) dreaming about what this future office will be like.  Gary and I are cohabitating come August…and we are going to FINALLY have a home office (I will be doing before and afters…don’t worry).  We’ll be sharing an office, which to be honest, I’m kind of excited about.  We talk all the time about how we’ll decorate it and what it will look like.  All I know is it is going to be very fashionable! I want to LOVE to be in my office.  So today…I dreamt up my perfect work getaway.  The look and feel of a place that will be the start of everything.  So…enjoy my little midwest urban oasis…I have no doubt that I will…

Love it! That chalkboard wall is awesome. J and I share an office right now, and the best decision was an 80″ long desk from IKEA. It’s HUGE and has plenty of room for us each to have our little stations!ReplyCancel

    • laurenwakefield - January 28, 2011 - 6:26 pm

That’s an awesome idea. I’ll have to look into that. And I’ve wanted a chalkboard wall for years…but never had a place to put one. Bring on August!ReplyCancel
