When I met Maggie, the first thing I noticed were her shoes.  I try not to be a judgmental person…but I think you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes.  And let me tell you…I was dead on.  She is just as fun, fashionable, and feisty as her shoes were.  Exactly my type of girl.  🙂  And Shaun is her perfect match.  He’s easy going and has a smile that makes even dentists jealous.   It’s kind of ridiculous how good looking this couple is.  Let’s be honest…they’re hot!  And on top of that they’re hilarious…and incredibly in love with each other.  We spent the perfect summer evening together turning urban decay into something beautiful.  I may be partial…but I think the result is something fabulous…almost as fabulous as her shoes.

I’m off for a Indy 500 filled Memorial Day weekend.  You have to be from Indiana to fully understand what the Indy 500 means.  It’s a weekend full of cook-outs and tailgating and things you can’t even imagine.  I highly recommend everyone experience the infield of the Indianapolis 500 at least once in their lives.  But more importantly, this weekend means it’s officially summer!  The flip flops come out and sunscreen is bought in bulk.  It’s 3 days of being outdoors eating food that will surely give you a heart attack.  It’s magical…to say the least.  So I thought today on Fashion Friday I would throw together some of things I am excited about for summer.  I thought about doing an “Indy 500” themed Fashion Friday…but let’s be honest…there’s just nothing fashionable about the greatest spectacle in racing.

Number 1 on the list…wedges.  I swore last summer I was going to rock the wedge.  I failed to say the least.  So this summer…it’s happening.

Wedges

Flat sandals are my go-to in summer (when I’m not wearing my cowboy boots).  They are a little more exciting than flip flops.  But don’t get me wrong…I love me some flip flops.
Sandals

OK I have to be honest here.  Realistically I will probably not wear a hat once this summer.  BUT!  That doesn’t change the fact that I like to think I might.  I would love to go to a tropical place where a big, floppy sun hat would be totally appropriate.  You never know….

Hats

So…I have an unhealthy obsession with bracelets.  I rarely wear necklaces.  I wear the same pair of earrings every day (mostly because Gary got me the perfect pair for Christmas a few years ago).  So bracelets are my thing.  While this isn’t necessarily a “summer” thing I like to think I pull out the louder, more colorful bracelets in summer.  I would like to own every single bracelet shown below.  *sigh*

Bangles

You can rest assured there will be a full recap of this weekend’s festivities come Tuesday.  I promise not to disappoint!  Happy Fashion Friday!!  What are your Memorial Day plans??

I would like the brown and black rimmed hat, the black sandals with the buckle and the black, gold and copper bracelet – thank you very much.ReplyCancel

I am so incredibly flattered to be featured on Kevin Lemon’s blog…The Viewsual Suspects.  When he approached me for a feature I immediately headed over to check out what this blog was all about.  It’s such a  unique and different idea that I didn’t even think twice.  It’s all about bringing the artistic community together and learning from each other…which I am ALL about.  I love the community that photography had given me and I feel so humbled by the people I have met along the way.  So head on over to The Viewsual Suspects and see all the goodness it has to offer!

Today I thought I would write about something that has been far to relevant in my life lately.  Rain.  While I love a lazy day on the couch when it’s pouring outside…I absolutely despise rain when I have photo sessions scheduled.  At the sake of sounding dramatic…rain has been ruining my life for the last few weeks.  I’ve had 5 out of 6 sessions cancel due to rain.  It’s no one’s fault…but it sucks nonetheless.  So yesterday…after my last cancellation…I decided I was going to do some serious research.  I was going to find every indoor place in this city that would be amazing for photos.  In the process I came across a ton of places that never would have even crossed my mind.  Since I know I’m not the only photographer out there who has this rain phobia…I thought I would share my findings.

Museums

While you may think museums and cameras don’t mix that’s not always true.  A lot of Natural History or Cultural Museums allow cameras.   And most museums have amazing interior architecture.  They may be a little dark and require some flash…but weddings are dark…so we can handle it.  🙂

Cafes

Every city (or at least I hope every city) has a coffee shop or cafe that is full of character.  Big coffee mugs…comfy couches….brightly colored walls.  These kind of details can make for amazing photos.  Just picture snagging the table by the window and having the rainy day as your backdrop.  Or grab an umbrella and shoot from the outside in.  Even though we hate it sometimes…there is a little romance when it comes to rain.

Ice Cream Shops

This kind of goes along with the cafe.  A cute, vintage ice cream shop could be perfect for rainy day photos.  One milkshake…two straws….perfection.  A bakery would work as well….everyone loves giant cupcakes.  🙂

Botanical Gardens

This is kind of an obvious one.  Some Botanical Gardens are outside…but some are enclosed.  It’s really the perfect way to be “outside” while still being protected from the rain. While this isn’t my preferred aesthetic…I had to include it.

Libraries

I know in Chicago…we have some beautiful libraries.  The Harold Washington Library has an amazing atrium at the top that can be rented out for weddings and events.  As long as there is not an event happening that would be the perfect indoor space.  Even if the library doesn’t have a well-lit atrium…just having so many books at your disposal can make for some really unique photos.   Look for the encyclopedia section or books with similar covers for a more uniform backdrop.

Hotels

Lucky for us Chicago photographers…Chicago is full of unique hotels.  The Trump Tower has an amazing rooftop terrace (partially indoors) as well as The Wit.  Most hotels will let you take photos in their public places or restaurants.   A lot of times, big hotels have several restaurants all with different themes.  So you could get a lot of variety from one hotel.

If you’re stuck with a rainy day…the best you can do is make the most of it.  While indoors may not be your first option…that doesn’t mean it still can’t be a great one.  And just think…after you’re done with the session you can take the couple outside and get pictures of them playing in the rain.  Place yourself under an awning or overhang to protect your equipment and let your couple just have fun!  Think how unique and fun their engagement photos would be.  Just a thought…

Hopefully this helps.  I know after my research I feel a lot better about a rainy forecast.  If weddings go on in the rain…why shouldn’t other photo sessions?  Make sure to call ahead of time just to make sure your indoor location of choice doesn’t have any restrictions.

Now I REALLY want to take pictures of a couple in the rain…any takers?

  • Joanna Brummel - May 23, 2011 - 4:05 pm

These are a lot of great ideas. Seeing the pictures of the indoor locations almost makes them more desirable looking than the traditional outside shots. Especially those modern white lounge chairs in the hotel!ReplyCancel

It had been six years and the day was finally here.  When she saw the limo waiting to pick her up from work…she knew exactly what was about to happen.  A single red rose, a limo ride, and a very well drawn out out map were the only things she had to lead her to the man of her dreams.  After following the dotted line…she saw him waiting for her.

As girls, we dream about the day our knight in shining armor proposes.  We’ve gone over it a million times in our heads and think we know exactly how we’ll feel.  After watching Matt propose to Erin…I realized all the daydreaming in the world can’t compare to the real thing.  The look on Erin’s face as he got down on one knee was euphoric.  I feel so grateful to have been a part of such a special moment.  As creepy as I felt hiding behind a tree…it was worth it to be able to document a moment of pure happiness.  Erin and Matt…thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day and there’s not a doubt in my mind that you guys are going to have a perfect life together.  🙂

Here it is….the proposal.
