I met Brianna a few months ago and knew we were a match made in heaven.  The second I saw her (and her sassy hot pink lips)…I knew she was the real deal.  Brianna was the makeup artist on a Bridal shoot I did recently and the makeup turned out better than I could have ever expected.  It was flawless!  As she was working her magic we got to talking and I couldn’t believe the wealth of information she had when it came to makeup.  As a makeup lover myself (I literally have drawers filled with eyeshadows)…I knew I had to pick her brain and share all her goodness with the blog world.  Brianna has an awesome website called Makeup Minutes where she does little video segments with how-tos and very helpful makeup tips.  I’m officially addicted.  So today on Fashion Friday it’s all things makeup.  Here are a few questions I asked…but feel free to leave any other question in the comment section.  I promise…she knows her stuff!  🙂

1. Tell me a little about yourself and your background…

Well, I always loved being in front of the camera and I ended up graduating in broadcast journalism and worked in that field for 6 years.  I started when I was 18, so I was very young.  Upon graduating college, I needed a change so I applied at Macys to work at the cosmetic counter.  I always LOVED makeup. Technically, I have worked in the makeup industry ever since.  Now, I freelance in Chicago and I am combining my broadcasting and makeup background with the launch of Makeup Minutes.

2. I’m slightly obsessed with makeup.  What are your favorite brands and why?

I think that overall life is hard, and makeup should be fun and easy.  You shouldnt think of it as a chore.  You should think of it as fashion…like buying a new top or dress and being excited to wear your look out.  I love Stila, of course, not only is it a good product, but the packaging is so fun and cute.  I also like Makeup Forever, and MAC.  I have to separate my makeup.  What I use for professional shoots, may not be what I would recommend a mom with two kids or a career woman.  Makeup is also about lifestyle so I am always educating my clients about that.  I have recently discovered Wet and Wild eyeshadows are surprisingly pretty decent for drugstore brand.

MAC Stila Makeup Forever
3. How would you define your personal makeup style?
I like to think of it as my signature style…what I LOVE to wear: Bright, bold lip, lots of eyeliner, bronzy cheeks, and gold or amber colored eyeshadow.

4. What are 3 pieces of advice you would give a bride when planning out her wedding day look?
1. Bring samples of a few makeup looks you like.  It’s always helpful in communicating through visuals what you would love to look like on your wedding day.
2. Stay Healthy.  Having beautiful skin takes a lot of pampering and its a lifestyle.  You need to eat right, exercise and get plenty of beauty sleep.  All these things DO come into play in maintaining good skin.
3. Take photos.  For pictures, you will need to have a little more makeup on than usual.  Remember, you are in a formal gown so you will need a formal makeup look.  Take photos of the look so you know how you will look on your special day.

5. Do you recommend doing a “trial run” before the actual wedding day?
Absolutely.  Maybe even a few trial runs…depending on how the first one goes.

Brianna

6. As a photographer, I think gorgeous makeup can really take wedding photos to the next level.  What would you recommend for a bride who wants that photo-ready look, without the cakey makeup feel?
Airbrush all the way!!!  Its the hottest thing out there right now, especially for brides!  You may pay a little more, but if your wedding is in the Summer…you will definitely want airbrush to beat the heat.

7.  What advice do you have for keeping makeup fresh throughout an entire wedding day?
Really, it’s airbrush foundation.  It seriously lasts all day.  I also recommend keeping some concealer, powder and your lip color tucked away in a small clutch for touch ups.

Bridal Makeup

8.  When I shoot a wedding, I show up with my makeup looking great…and by the end of the ceremony it’s a mess.  Do you have any suggestions for makeup for photographers that will stay put and not sweat off or rub off on the camera?
Yes!  That’s when good makeup comes into play.  Yes, you will have to pay a little more, but its worth it in the end.  I would recommend an HD quality foundation or airbrush.  I like Makeup Forever’s Foundation and Powder.  Also, I would recommend using a waterproof eyeliner ( Bobbi Brown’s Gel Eyeliner in the pot or Stila’s waterproof liquid liner) and choose a lipstick (I love MAC’s Lipsticks) or lip stain (Revlon’s Just Bitten is great) for long lasting results.

9. What’s your favorite thing about being a makeup artist?
My favorite thing is making a woman feel beautiful.  I know it sounds so cliche but seeing the before and after shots are really amazing and seeing a clients confidence level go up several notches really makes me feel like I did a job well done!

Bridal Makeup

10. And last but not least, if you could do anyone’s makeup in the world…who would it be?
You are probably thinking I am going to say a celebrity, but I love working on everyday people.  I love working on someone who may not wear any makeup at all, or someone who had gorgeous eyes and isn’t really playing them up the way they should.  I especially love working on kids who have low self-esteem and think they are ugly and showing them that they ARE beautiful.  I was this kid a long time ago so I can relate to them.  I am able to do this through makeup and its a very powerful thing that I love!

Brianna – Thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge and talent!  You are truly amazing and I will most definitely be calling you before my next date night!  I need to try out those sassy pink lips!
Happy Fashion Friday!

I learned a lot from this article – I think I need to go make up shopping.
    ThanksReplyCancel

I’ve said many times before that I find it very hard to write FAQ posts.   As soon as I go to start one I immediately stop myself.  I don’t know if I’m just afraid people will disagree with me (which is almost guaranteed to happen)…or I don’t feel qualified enough.  I don’t know what it is but I think it’s time to overcome it.  I read a quote somewhere that I find to be very appropriate.  “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” So today…I am doing it.  I know when I first started my business I was scouring blogs trying to find any and every bit of information I could.  Other photographer’s blog posts helped me grow immensely and if I can help even one person then I’d say it’s worth me stepping out of my comfort zone.

Today I’m going to talk about variety.  I don’t know about you, but there have been so many times that I have been standing in front of a couple at an engagement session with sheer panic running through me because I didn’t know what to do next.  I mean they can only look at each other and look at me so many times before they realize I am drawing a ginormous blank.  I remember editing my first engagement session and thinking I basically just took the same picture over and over again in 10 different spots.  I would spend hours online looking up different poses but for some reason when it came time to deliver…I blanked.  Over time I came up with little tricks that helped me avoid the inevitable blank and provide my couples with tons of variety in their photos.

The day I started shooting with prime lenses changed my life.  When you are your own zoom it forces you to move and get in the action.  One of the things that helps me tremendously is to always be moving.  I’m always searching for a different angle or a different way to shoot the same pose.  Coming up with a pose that really works can be hard…especially under pressure.  So once you get your couple in a pose you like…move around them and shoot it from every angle possible.  Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about.

In the first photo I was crouched down shooting Ashley straight on.  In the second one I was standing above her shooting down.  She didn’t move at all…but I got two totally different images.

Engagement Photography Posing Engagement Photography Posing

Same with this set.  I shot over Shaun’s shoulder in the first one to get a shot of Maggie.  And then in the second I came around in front and got a shot of both of them.

Engagement Photography Posing Engagement Photography Posing

In these photos, I not only changed my angle…but my distance.  Getting a little further away allowed me to be able to shoot through the grass…which gives me the variety I am striving for.  Wedding Photography Posing Wedding Photography Posing

From the front….from the back.  All Christine had to do was turn her head.

Wedding Photography Posing

Sometimes different lighting situations prevent you from being able to shoot from every angle.  I was lucky on this particular shoot to have beautiful overcast skies.  BUT….if you are in harsh lighting you can still use this concept.  In the photo on the left I am shooting directly in front of them.  In the photo on the right I moved my body about 6 inches to the left and got in really tight.  Had there been direct sunlight…I would have had it behind them and both photos would have still been successful.

Wedding Photography Posing

Again…another example of different angles making two completely different photos.  On this particular day it was incredibly sunny but I was still able to move around and keep the light where I wanted it.

Engagement Photography Posing

Engagement Photography Posing

Another thing that really helps me is to think about the relationship between focus and zoom.  Choosing different distances and focal points can make completely different images.  Here’s what I mean…

In the photo on the left I am focused on Ravyn’s eye.  In the photo on the right I am closer to her and focused on her bracelet.  Focusing on two completely different areas helps you get variety in one pose.

Engagement Photography Posing

This is the same concept…just executed a little differently.  When taking these photos, I knew they would work really nicely together.  So as you can see, in one photo Ashley is in focus…and in the other Lee is in focus which changes it up a little.

Engagement Photography Posing

Here is an example of being your own zoom.  For the most part I shot all three of these images from the same angle…give or take.  I changed my distance AND focal point to get a different feel in each image.

Engagement Photography Posing

Last example I promise!  These photos are taken from the exact same angle…but the focus is completely different.   One is focusing on the flowers while one is focusing on Emilia’s rings.   She didn’t have to do anything…I just changed what I was looking at.

Wedding Photography Posing

I want to stress that all of the above are just my way of doing things.  They are in no way the only way to the right way.   I know if I had had this information when I first started it would have saved me a ton of stress and anxiety.  So hopefully this is helpful to at least someone and if not…I promise to try again next time.  🙂

you know what i love about posing a couple and then moving around to different angles and changing focus… [more often than not] clients begin to relax into the pose and into one another and interact [sweetly/funnily/tenderly] and you get to photograph some really genuine moments [even though the environment is controlled]!!

well done lauren… can’t wait for the next faq!ReplyCancel

Thanks! And you are so right. It really does allow them to relax instead of having them constantly change what they are doing.ReplyCancel

There’s something about Joänna and Ben that just makes me smile.  Maybe it’s the way Joänna glows when she looks at Ben.  Or the way Ben makes everyone smile when he walks into a room…especially his new wife.  Or the way, together, they are fearless in chasing their dreams and living out their love story.  They make love seem simple and pure…and I’d say that’s pretty rare.  I took my first trip to Madison to be a part of their special day and special was exactly what it was.  It was a day filled with love, laughter, incredibly high temperatures, and happy hearts.  Ben and Joänna…I know your life together will be everything you want it to be…and so much more.  Finding true love is something to be so proud of…and I’d say you did just that.

Without further ado…Mr. and Mrs. Zumhagen!  🙂

awesome wed, i like it 🙂ReplyCancel

It was a rainy afternoon…and I was unbelievably nervous.  I swung the door open and I was greeted by a thousand smiling faces.  Well…a thousand might be a stretch…but there were at least 5.  My palms were sweaty and I suddenly felt very under-dressed.   Leave it to me to wear jeans to a job interview.  In my defense…they were nice jeans.  🙂  I had this grand idea of  working at a ballroom dance studio.  I was in college and I thought it would be the perfect part time job.  A chance for me to be a part of the excitement and glitz that is ballroom dancing.   It ended up being so much more.  Six years later that little part time job has turned into a huge part of my life.  And more than anything else…it has given me the chance to meet some of my favorite people.  People that I’ve grown with and laughed with…and am so unbelievably lucky to call my friends.   Jimmy and Jessica are two of those people.   They are two of the most fun, passionate, genuine people I know.  It doesn’t surprise me one bit that they have decided to spend the rest of their lives together.  So blog world…meet the ballroom dancing, drop dead GORGEOUS, incredibly entertaining…Jimmy and Jess…

I’ve been focusing a lot lately on my brand.  I heard the amazing Promise Tangeman speak recently and she made me look at branding in a whole new way.   I have to be honest…it is quite possibly one of the most frustrating processes on the planet!  Trying to figure out what colors, textures, styles define you in so incredibly hard.  But I’m working at it…with much help from Pinterest…one step at time.  One of the things I’ve been really trying to nail down lately is color.  Right now…my brand is basically black and white…but when I sit back and think about it…black and white isn’t me at all.   I’m not sure why, but I have such a hard time with color.  Envisioning color palettes…defining what colors are “me”…it’s all very hard for me.   One of the things I learned from Promise is to look at your style.  What colors do you see most in your closet?  What colors to you wear the most?  So I thought today on Fashion Friday I would do a little fashion branding.  I have found this to be an AMAZING way to define my color palette and see what it is that makes up my style.  While I don’t have it nailed down yet…it’s getting there…

For any photographer…or anyone for that matter…I promise this is a great way to get your branding off to a good start.  If you’re not into Polyvore…find a picture of you in your favorite outfit…or an outfit that really represents your style…and sample the colors from it.   You’ll see everything come together right before your eyes…

Happy Fashion Friday!
