I was stuck in the worst traffic and panicking about what my lack of punctuality was going to say about me.  See…trying to leave the city of Chicago any time between 3pm and 7pm is virtually impossible.  But I made the fete…and although I was 20 minutes late.  I made it.  The second I sat down and starting talking to them it was like we were old friends.  Every other sentence was, “Oh my god me too!”  The longer I sat there the more excited I got.  I LOVED this couple.  They were funny…thought I was funny…they were obviously head over heels for each other….and were considering me to be a  part of their special day.

That was 2 months ago.  Today…I not only get to be a part of what is sure to be a FABULOUS wedding…but I have made some great friends.  Amanda and Chris are literally one of a kind.  They prefer picnics over take-out and frequent apple orchards in their spare time.  They are like the poster couple for happiness and it is infectious.  Simply put…Chris is hilarious.  He adds laughter to every situation and you can just tell he would do anything to make Amanda smile.  Amanda is witty…incredibly stylish (her accessories are to die for)…and the way she looks at Chris is unmistakable.  He is the one for her.  Together they are the type of couple people look up to and Gary and I can’t wait for many more double dates to come.  🙂

Last weekend we met on the perfect fall day for some snazzy engagement photos.  These two make my heart smile…but I’ll let you see for yourself.

Let me start by saying blogging is hard.  Really hard.  I remember the first time I sat down to write a blog post and I sat there staring at the blinking cursor for hours.  All I could think was “Who cares what I have to say?”  “No one is reading this.”  I would rack my brain for hours trying to figure out how to sound interesting and unique.  It was awful.

It wasn’t until I stopped writing my blog for everyone else…and started writing it for me that it became something I loved.  Something that I looked forward to writing and something that has grown my business exponentially.  I 100% believe blogging is an amazing asset to your business.  I know there are LOTS of people out there that disagree with me…but I’ve seen it work first hand.  Today I am going to talk about how blogging can help grow your business and tips on how to make it something you love…instead of something you loathe.

1. Blog like you mean it.

When you sit down to write a blog post…write something that matters to you.  Something that you care about.  Your readers can see a fluff post from a mile away.  Think of your blog as a scrapbook of you life.  If you went on a weekend getaway to Idaho…talk about it.  Show pictures.  If you love rocky road ice cream…talk about it.  Make everyone who reads that post feel like they HAVE to have a bowl of rocky road ice cream.  Talk about the things that actually matter to you…not the things you think should matter to you.

2. Be consistent.

Consistency is key.  When you readers come back to your blog they want to see new material.  If they see a post that is 2 weeks old staring them in the face…they most likely will not come back.  If you can only commit to blogging once a week…blog once a week.  Or 3 times a week…or every day.  You get the idea.  If you have trouble coming up a blog post every day…start a series.  Some of my favorite blogs I read religiously have weekly series such as Wedding Wednesday or Tuesday Tips and Tricks.  I know if I go to the Gray’s blog on a Tuesday I am going to learn something.  So I never miss it.  Over time, your readers will get to know you.  They are reading your blog because they like what you like…and they are interested in the things you are writing about.  Which leads me to my next point…

3. YOU are your blog.  And your ideal clients love YOU.

If a potential bride is reading all about how your favorite show is American Idol…and her favorite show is American Idol…she instantly has a connection with you.  Before she has ever spoken a word to you she feels like she knows you…and that is all because of your blog.  I constantly blog about my dog, how happy I am with Gary, fashion, and my obsession with Starbucks.  Why?  Because I honestly, truly love all those things…and because my ideal bride thinks Goose is the cutest, loves her fiance, loves fashion, and wants to grab a Starbucks.  The people who don’t like you are most likely never going to like you.  So if you are trying to attract everyone…you’re going to drive yourself nuts. Be yourself and the people who like you…are going to really like you.  The brides who contact you and have been reading your blog for however long…most likely are going to be the brides you will be friends with years down the line.   Just remember the one thing you have that no one else has…is YOU!

Blogging is a huge task.  It’s a commitment and something you have to believe in.  I don’t have all the answers by a long shot.  And I have a LONG way to go in my business…but I know over the last year and a half my business has gotten to the place it is today because of my blog.   I have found clients who have become amazing friends all through being myself and putting it on the internet.  I am absolutely certain that there are people out there who passionately disagree with me on this subject…but this has worked for me and if I can help someone else grow their business in even the smallest way then it’s worth it.  🙂

If you have any questions on this subject or anything else…leave a comment or shoot me an email and I’m happy to help!

And since I firmly believe all blog posts should include a picture…I just saw these on Pinterest and decided I must have them.

What can I say?  Yesterday was the perfect day for a photo session.  It was 80 degrees yet the air was cool.  Fall colors were in full bloom making for the world’s best backdrop.  And then you throw in a couple who just can’t get enough of each other…perfection.  There is so much more goodness of these two but for now I had to share just a little peek….

Every year my parents have a party…and not just any party.  It’s a hoedown.   Yeah…that’s how we roll in Indiana.  Their driveway is lined with hay bales and country music fills the air.  The chili is hot and the s’mores are toasty…it’s midwest at it’s best.  I mean there’s even line dancing…what more could you ask for?  Personally, I always look forward to this party.  Mostly because it’s outside and Lauren + fall + outside = happy.  But also because it’s just a down right good time.  (Insert me doing the jig)

SO…as you can guess…Fashion Friday today is all about doing the jig in style…hoedown style.  Fall clothes make me so happy.  Especially when I’m outside and I have a legitimate reason to keep my jacket and scarf on ALL night.  I’ve been known to sit on the couch all night wearing a scarf.  Gary thinks it’s weird.  I think it’s necessary.

Without further adieu…here are my picks for some good ol’ midwest hoedown-ing fashion….

If you remember last week, I showed you my design board for my shiny new brand.  I’m still so excited about it…I think I’ll do a happy dance.  Well…when you are rebranding there is a lot to think about.  It starts with the feel of your brand…then the logo…then your website/blog/twitter/and every other online outlet you can think of.  Something that is sometimes overlooked is photos.  And I’m not necessarily talking about photos you take (in a perfect world those will always represent your style and brand)…but I’m talking about photos of yourself.    In my opinion, I think the first thing people should see when they go to your site is your smiling face!  I mean after all…as photographers…we are our brands so why wouldn’t we put ourselves front and center.

So today on Fashion Friday I thought I would share my branding fashion.  As I continue on this rebranding journey, I will have to get new photos taken to match the feel of my site…and that really represent me.  I am also working on a very exciting new promo video…and you know I am going to have to find tons of great outfits for that!  🙂  I don’t so much think it is important to “match” your brand…as much as it is to represent it.  Represent the style and overall feel so every detail is cohesive.   So here are my picks for my future brand…

It was brought to my attention that you might like to know where to buy some of these outfits.  So ask and you shall receive!  🙂
