When I first started my photography business I focused mostly on families.  I loved chasing kids around and capturing their innocent smiles.  Or mischievous smiles…depending on who we’re talking about.  😉 I loved getting to know the families and extended families and friends of the families.  I would find myself sitting in front of my computer with a giant smile on my face as I edited their photos.  Kids are just happy…what can I say.  As my business turned more towards weddings so did my blog.  I love each one of the families I’ve worked with so much and I wanted to find a way to showcase their smiling faces.  So today the blog is all about families!  Leave them a little love and enjoy all these adorable, smiling faces!

It is a goal of mine to never stop learning.  As a photographer there is always more to learn…more to discover…a million more ways to expand what you know.  You can attend workshops, buy books, follow blogs, practice!  In my opinion, there is always something you can be doing to learn.

Last weekend I had a whole different kind of learning experience.  My good friend and photographer Emilia Schobeiri took some new head-shots for me.  The tables were turned and I was the one being photographed.  Let me tell you…there is no better way to really understand how your clients are feeling than to put yourself in their shoes.  As photographers, we know if we are getting “the shot” or that the lighting is perfect or not so perfect…but our clients don’t.  All they know is that there is a camera pointed at their face and they hope what they’re doing is “right.”  My photo session definitely opened my eyes to some things I need to be sure I’m doing…so I thought I would share some of those tips with you.

1. Give positive feedback…CONSTANTLY!  Every time Emilia told me I was doing great or she smiled or said “Gorgeous!”…I felt immediately at ease.  It made me feel like I was doing a good job and I’m sure made the photos that much better.

2. Tell your clients exactly what to do.  Tell them where to look, how to look, where to put their hands, etc.  Tell them everything!  As the photographer, we can see what our clients are doing.  Our clients can’t.  Emilia was constantly telling me where to put my hands and showing me how to do it.  It was so helpful.  When left to my own devices I felt completely out of sorts.

3.  If your client does something on their own…always tell them it looks great…even if it doesn’t.  There were several times when I would put my hands on my hips (something I do all the time without thinking) or messed with my hair…and Emilia always told me it looked great and snapped a picture.  This goes back to the positive feedback…it made me feel like I was doing something “right” and reassured my confidence.

Here are some other tips that don’t necessarily apply to my session but some things I have found to be very helpful.

4. Call your clients by their names.  It sounds silly but it is much less confusing when they know exaclty what they are supposed to be doing.  “John look at Jane.  Jane look at me.”  “Jane look at John.  John look over my left shoulder.”  “John and Jane look at each other and hold hands.”  You get the idea.  There is no confusion on exactly what everyone should be doing.

5. Get uncomfortable.  At least at the beginning, your clients are uncomfortable.  I guarantee it.  They are not used to being photographed and this is a foreign experience to them.  If you do whatever you can to make them comfortable…including getting uncomfortable yourself…it will make a world of difference.  I literally look like a crazy person when I am taking photos.  I tell really corny jokes, come up with crazy scenarios, jump up and down, squeal…you name it, I’ve done it.  I will do whatever it takes to make my clients laugh…feel at ease…and ultimately get the best photographs possible.

As always…I hope someone can find this helpful.  And if not…that’s ok too.  Moral of the story…get your photos taken.  It will open your eyes I promise!

Here are a few shots from my session with Emilia.  I’ll post more later I promise!

You know you love that face.  😉

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!  And a special thanks to Emilia for taking my photos!  I love them and am eternally grateful!

Such great tips! Thanks for sharing 🙂 Gorgeous photos of you!ReplyCancel

The waiter warned him…but he ordered them anyways.  If you ask me…anything with the word Habanero in the title is on the ‘no freaking way’ list.  Travis wasn’t scared…I mean how hot could they be?  Our food arrived and you could just see the spicy on those wings.  I was secretly terrified.  Katie and I enjoyed our Habanero-free lunches as Travis dove right in.  It only took a few seconds before it was all over.  Tears were running down his cheeks…his mouth turned a very spicy shade of red…and you could see the pain all over his face.  As Travis suffered in silence, Katie laughed.  More of a giggle actually.  As she smiled and glanced at him with the look of “I told you so” on her face…Travis couldn’t help but smile.  As painful as it may have been.

To me…this sums up Katie and Travis.  Always willing to try something new…as long as it’s together.  They have fun in everything they do…no matter what.  When they’re together the smiles never stop and neither does the laughter.  They view life as an adventure that they are ready to tackle together….and I love that.  I got to spend the day with them hanging out, laughing, watching Travis kill all his taste buds…and most of all having fun.  And lots of it.

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone is enjoying their short week!  🙂

My college experience wasn’t exactly the norm.  My “dorm” room was a one bedroom apartment in downtown Chicago and my “campus” consisted of city streets and high-rises.  I’m not complaining…I tried out the campus life and found very quickly that is wasn’t for me.  But every now and then…I daydream about what life would have been like if I had gone the other direction.  I imagine hanging out at the Union…attending study groups on a giant lawn where people are playing frisbee….wearing my school colors with pride and regularly attending football games.  You know…college stuff.  Something about the energy on a college campus is so energizing to me.  I can’t really explain it.  I mean where else is it absolutely acceptable to wear sweatpants all day…every day??  So when Katie and Travis mentioned going to the UW Madison campus for their engagement pictures I was beyond stoked.  Here’s a little sneak peek of our day.  There is much more scholarly goodness coming soon. 🙂

We of course had to get some of Madison’s very own Spotted Cow.  I did indulge in a sip or two…and it was quite delightful.

waiting to see Travis & Katie. Your photography is awesome!ReplyCancel

We knew it was possible but no one was absolutely sure.  This place was special to her and the time seemed right…we all just had a feeling.  It was July 4th and we had just walked through the door from the fourth of July picnic.  July 4th in Michigan is unlike anywhere else.  As we all gathered in the kitchen Kasey’s (my sister-in-law) mom yelled downstairs…”Kasey…Lisa wants you to come over.”  We ignored her at first and then all looked at each other as if it clicked for all of us at the same time.  “Lisa wants us to come over?  LISA WANTS US TO COME OVER!”  We grabbed a bottle of champagne out of the fridge and ran next door.  It was really more of a sprint.  We agreed to hide the champagne until we were absolutely certain.  As we walked in the door my brother spotted it.  A perfect sparkle coming from her left hand.  He did it.  He asked and she said yes.

Everything about Lisa and Eric is so sincere.  From their engagement…which was just the two of them, the sunset and her favorite place in the world.  To the way they care about each other and all the people in their lives.  There’s something so happy about just being around them.  The way Eric makes Lisa smile…constantly.  Their playful banter that just shows they truly are best friends.  And the best yet, the way Eric looks at Lisa with this confidence.  Like he is absolutely positive he is spending his life with the only woman for him.  The perfect woman for him.   I am so grateful to get the chance to be a part of their special day…and most importantly, to call them friends.
