I know I’ve said this before…many times.  But since I’m in the spirit of doing instead of just saying I thought I would say it one final time.  I am going to do the most fashionable thing I can think of an I am going to organize my office. LOOK OUT!  At this moment…my office oasis is an embarrassment.  It’s boxes upon piles upon camera equipment upon clothes upon boxes.  It was kind of like once it started turning into a catch-all…that is what it became.  Fast.  And it’s bad.  Gary and I have made a deal to get it together.  And this time we’re doing it.  F’real.

So today on Fashion Friday I’m organizing.  I figure the best place to start is in my head…and go from there.

Office Organization, Home Office, Fashion Friday

I pinky swear to show you the final result when I get it all together.  SOON!!!  And we all know how serious a pinky swear is.  🙂

There are a lot of things in my business I am still figuring out.  I’m perfecting my workflow and finding systems that work best for me.  I’m constantly learning new things and bettering myself not only as  photographer, but as a business woman.  I won’t lie…it’s hard.  Especially during this fun time of year we like to refer to as Tax Season.  (Insert my panic face).  There are moments where I feel completely lost.  Sort of like I know absolutely nothing and could have a melt down at any given moment.  Kudos to all the accountants out there.  But I have to keep bringing myself back to the surface and reminding myself of what I do know.  And what is working.  I thought today I would do an FAQ post on the things I can say for sure…are working for me.  Being me…plain and simple.

Being Myself.

This was hard.  I wanted to fit into the Wedding Photographer mold so bad I would have done and said anything.  I was doing everything I thought I should be doing instead of just being myself.  I blogged about things I thought I should blog about instead of things I wanted to blog about.  I would stare at Facebook trying to think up something to say instead of just saying things that came natural to me.  In other words…I was being everyone other than myself.  And this was not working.  I was not booking weddings.  I was not moving forward.  I was failing.

The day I started honestly being myself is the day everything changed.  I forced myself to present myself in a way that was honest and 100% me.  As soon as I made this change, not only was I booking weddings but I was booking them with brides I LOVED.  Brides who liked what I liked.  And who were just like me.  This is not to say this was an overnight change…but the more of myself I put out on the web…the more things changed.

Here are a few things I changed in a big way to be more of myself…and put more of myself out there.

My Blog

The day I started blogging about things that I cared about…and things that represented me was a big turning point.  I would look at my blog stats and there were certain times I couldn’t believe my eyes.  The days I thought I was blogging about what I should be blogging about…no one was reading.  But the days I would blog about my Dad and I’s obsession with Meatloaf…TONS of people were reading!  It was like a light bulb went off in my head.  If you write about things that interest you, and matter to you, you will attract those same types of people.  Potential brides that share your same interests and find the same things important.  And better yet, brides that value you as a person…and hopefully a friend.

Here is one of my first blog posts.  If you asked me right now when Earth Day is…I couldn’t tell you.  But on that particular day…everyone else was blogging about it.  So…so did I.

I’m pretty sure I had one view that day…my mom.

Not only was I being honest on my my blog…I was being consistent.  I blogged everyday, Monday through Friday…and I blogged about subjects that I truly loved.  Photography, Gary, Goose, spending way too much time on the couch, my love of all things Starbucks…you get the picture.  The people who love what they read on my blog are the people who contact me…and the people who I love to work with.  It was a match made in heaven.

My Website

This one took time. In the beginning…just like blogging and being myself…I was copying.  I wrote my bio section just like everyone else’s bio section.  I tried to make sure my site “fit in” with everyone else’s.  I’m not proud of this…but it’s the truth.  It was only a few months ago when I published a site that I can honestly say represents me and my style.  It showcases a brand that defines me (thanks Ravyn!!!!  If you’re looking to rebrand…call her!) and more important a visual identity I’m proud of.  It is easy to feel like a logo and a color scheme define a brand…but it is so much more.

One of the most successful things I did to bring more of me to my site and brand was adding video.  When potential brides came to my site they saw me…talking…living my life how I honestly live it…and they connected.  They may connect to the fact that I”m drinking a Starbucks coffee…or to the way Gary and I live our life…but before they’ve ever spoken to me they feel like they know me.  And that is something that is priceless.

Video by Joseph Isaacs.  He’s AMAZING!!!!!

 Facebook

Oh Facebook.  We have had our up and downs.  As I already mentioned…I used to stare at my blank status update and rack my brain for something to write.  Why was this hard for me?  I have no clue.  I mean if you think about it…how hard is it to write about YOUR OWN status.  I think at the time I felt like everyone around me was so much wittier or relevant.  And at times just way more interesting.  One day I just made the decision to say whatever I was thinking.  No matter what it was.  If I was eating Goldfish and thinking about how much I love them…then that would be my status update.  And guess what…a whole lot of other people like Goldfish too.  Who would have guessed.  As I stuck by this way of thinking I began posting snuggly pictures of Goose and funny pictures of Gary.  Random thoughts and humorous tidbits.  And once again…the people who “liked” what I was saying where people who were just like me.

Facebook Status

This may all seem really simple but over time it is what has worked for me.  Being ME.  And not the me I thought I had to be…but who I actually am.  This may seem silly to some…but hopefully some of you can use this to help grow your businesses into exactly what you want them to be.  And as always…I’m more than happy to answer any and all of your questions.  Just ask.  🙂

Lauren thank you soo much for this post!!!! I feel like you’re talking directly to me. I’ve been struggling with this lately. I’m not a good writer and therefore I struggle putting together posts for my blog. I’m working on a website and want it to reflect “me”! This is giving me the courage to be me and put myself out there for my poential brides/clients.ReplyCancel

    • laurenwakefield - March 29, 2012 - 3:21 pm

You are so welcome! When I started blogging I was so focused on how “bad” of a writer I was that it held me back. My advice is just to write from the heart. Forget about grammar and vocabulary and just use your voice. Hope this helps!ReplyCancel

  • Tami - March 29, 2012 - 5:42 pm

Oh Lauren. I’ve got so many thoughts going through my mind right now. I kind of want to hug you and cry and run away all in the same moment. First of all…it’s weird to me that I’ve only hung out with you one evening since I really feel like I’ve known you for a while now! That’s really strange to me. Secondly, your Earth Day post CRACKED me up because I’ve soooo been there and done that! I was just telling someone, why is it that if I post something that sounds smart about photography, no one really cares, but when I blog about my driver’s license picture, everyone reads it? Haha…it didn’t really make sense to me until I read that earth day post of yours. You’re right…being us just adds flavor. But then comes the therapy session, not really knowing who “me” is or what part of me is okay to show to the world. And now that this comment has turned into my own therapy session, I’ll just end it by saying that I really need to rebrand by business, so I will be looking into Ravyn! 🙂 Happy Thursday to you, Friend!ReplyCancel

So this is how it’s done! Being you instead of trying to be someone else – Sounds right to me!

As you may have remembered, I took a little trip to Vegas last month.  When I returned home I was gung-ho about putting things into action.  I wanted to stop saying I would do it when…or I would do it if.  It was time to start doing it now!  My business was growing faster than I even realized and I needed to get ahead of it if it was going to turn into everything I wanted it to be.  When I walked through the door from Vegas there was a package waiting for me.  I wasn’t expecting anything…so of course it was that much more exciting.  I opened up the perfect ‘just because’ gift from my brother and sister-in-law and I was obsessed.  Not only did they get me something I loved but…they got it for no reason.  Just because.

I immediately knew what I wanted to do.  This is how I wanted to treat my clients.  I wanted them to feel the gratitude I feel towards them.  I wanted them to experience a little mid-week surprise…just because.  My business is everything it is because of them…and they deserve to know what that means to me.  This idea had literally been sitting for months…piled under a million excuses.  Well…last night…all those excuses bit the dust.  I marked one more thing of the “now” list.  And it felt good.

The Client Experience, Client Gifts, thank you gifts The Client Experience, Client Gifts, thank you gifts

What can you do to stand apart?  What can you do to show your clients what they mean to you?  To show them how much you care about them?

Leave your ideas below and one special commenter will get a ‘just because’ gift from yours truly.  🙂

LOVE giving gifts! A bride and groom I met with just told me the loved the personal touch at our consult.

One fun one I did earlier this year, was a “date night in”. I gave them pretty popcorn kernels to pop, and a variety of seasonings in cute bottles, and fun striped popcorn bags, and one of my favorite movies. They loved it!ReplyCancel

I also made homemade salted caramels and delivered them to all of my local clients for valentines day, just to say “i love you”…Pretty sure I’ll be doing that every year, it was a HIT!!ReplyCancel

I like to make the individual days of the week festive. Crime show Wednesday (that’s when all the best ones are on)…Date Night Thursday…lay-on-the-couch-all-day Sunday…and of course, Taco Tuesday. Somehow it makes the week seem extra exciting. You know…naming the days. Like a third grader. I think I’m going to start implementing Champagne Fridays. It has a nice ring to it…don’t you think?

Tonight is Taco Tuesday…and I get far too excited for this fiesta of a night. I may or may not whip out the sombrero. And since I love you all so much…I thought I would share another healthy swap with you. So your fiesta can not only be delicious…but nutritious. 🙂

Turkey Taco Bowls, Taco Tuesday

Turkey Taco Bowls

1 package Ground Turkey

1 package Taco Seasoning

1 bag shredded lettuce (or you can buy a head of lettuce and shred it yourself.  I am not that ambitious.)

1 tomato

1 block sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

0% fat plain Greek Yogurt

Salsa (pick your favorite.  I like Herdez Medium Salsa)

1. Brown meat in a skillet.

2. Follow directions on the Taco Seasoning and season meat accordingly.

3. In a separate bowl, mix equal parts Greek Yogurt and salsa.  I usually use about a 1/2 cup of each.  This is going to be the “sour cream” in your taco bowl.

4. Dice tomato.

5. In a bowl, layer shredded lettuce, seasoned ground turkey, shredded cheese, tomatoes and creamy salsa mixture.

(You can also add optional toppings: Onion, avocado, lime, beans, ect. if you wish)

6. Mix up and enjoy.  You can also add a some Baked Tostitos for a little crunch!

I am officially calling today…casual Friday.  Because let’s be honest…we all need a day once in a while to sit around in our comfy clothes and drink too much coffee.  A day to throw our hair up and wear the clothes that feel like a hug.  Those yoga pants that you secretly wish you could live in…or that t-shirt that is softer than all the others.  A day with no place to go and every excuse to be casual.  If for no other reason…because it’s Friday.
