You’re probably thinking…Lauren…didn’t you just say you were going to be taking pictures of real people for Fashion Friday???  Well…yes…yes I did.  But when I woke up this morning and felt the 65 degrees floating in my windows I knew today had to be about fall.  Fall is so close I can literally taste it and it makes me giddy.  It’s scarf weather people!!!!  And this makes be happy beyond belief.  So I thought today on Fashion Friday I’d pick out some of my fall must-haves.  And then as fall approaches I’ll show you the real life versions as they play out.  Sound good?

Ok…shoes are my favorite part of fall.  Obviously.  Any excuse to wear boots make me happy.  I have my eyes on these Frye boots that, realistically, I’ll never be able to afford but I am at least going to hunt down some look-alikes.  I’m also going to rock out some boat shoes this fall.  Boat shoes and some skinny jeans with a comfy tee.  Yes please.

My obsession with maxi dresses was no secret so it’s safe to say I am also obsessed with maxi skirts.  So comfy.  And if you ask me…perfect for fall.  I also am not following the “no white after labor day” rule and will be sporting some white jeans well into the fall months.  And last but not least…I’m going to try out some of these vintage flares.  I’ve seen some really cute outfits involving these bad boys so I think I need to try it out.  🙂

**sigh** Blazers.  I <3 them.  I think Boston must have rubbed off on me because I’m really liking the nautical colors right now.   So both a navy and white blazer are a must.  I also just bought this mustard cardigan that I cannot wait to wear with the perfect accessory…some pumpkin spice.  I’m also envisioning cool nights up on the roof with a comfy, over-sized cardigan and glass of wine.  Ahhhh…perfect.

As my hair grows back and I get ready to embrace the pixi cut…hats and headbands are going to be my new best friends.  As well as some fun new scarves of course.  🙂

So…who else is SOOOOOO ready for fall?  I will be brewing some pumpkin coffee this weekend.  Look out.

Ooooooh don’t tempt me! Maybe I will need to splurge. :\ReplyCancel

Oh…where to even start.  The love I have for this little family is out of control.  Cara is my sister from another mister…and Ava will call me Aunt Lauren one day if it’s the last thing I do!  😉   After the Belvins moved out of Chicago I was so depressed at the thought of us losing touch.  Or me not being able to see little Murphy man any more.  It was easy for me to zip up the street to their house when they lived a mile away…but 1000 miles away was a different story.  I mean schedules get busy and there was no way I was going to make it out to see them as much as I’d like…or even at all.  But I was so wrong.  Somehow…every year we get it together enough to make it out there and it is hands down…always one of the highlights of my year.  And every year I fall more and more in love with my Belvins.  I, honestly, feel so lucky to get to watch these kids grow up and in some weird way feel like a part of their little family.  🙂

Cara, is by far my most loyal “client.”  She waits for me to come visit every year and then I make her sign her life away saying she will never let another photographer photograph those kiddos.  And she never does.  🙂  It’s safe to say we have to cram a year’s worth of pictures into one weekend…so this is part 1.

Let me just say that Ava does not smile…at least not for me.  So this was a huge accomplishment.  🙂

As photographers…we use different cameras and lenses.  Nikon vs. Canon.  Prime vs. zoom.  We have different shooting styles and subjetcs.  Weddings vs. Portraits.  Soft vs. bold.  But we all have one thing in common…light.  When I was in photo school they always used to tell us that we were artists…and light was our medium.  Cheesy I know.  But true.  Whatever direction we may go with photography we are all constantly looking for the same thing…good light.  We may see it differently and mold it in our own special way, but no matter what…we need it to be able to do what we do.

Back in school, it was easy to understand lighting because we were creating it.  We had strobes and every soft box/umbrella/diffuser that existed.  We could make every kind of lighting situation you could think of.  Control is one of the best things about studio lighting.   But what about when we lose that control?  As wedding photographers we are sent out into midday sun…rain…clouds…whatever it may be and we have to be able to control the light.  And not just control it…make it beautiful.  Unfortunately…you can’t throw a soft box on the sun.  Although how cool would that be!?!  Understanding the different qualities of light and being able to seek out and find good light is, in my opinion, one of the most important parts of our job.  If not the most important part.

I’m definitely no expert…and am constantly learning every single day…but here are some little tidbits I’ve learned along the way.

Seeking out light

For a lack of a better word…the easiest light can be found in open shade.  Open shade is a wide area that is in consistent shade.  You can put your subjects in the shaded area and not worry about sun on their face or how to control the light.  It would be sort of a blank canvas for you to do with your subjects what you please.  This kind of lighting is great when you are dealing with large groups such as family formals at a weddings.  Or if you have a certain pose in mind that wouldn’t work with the particular light at that time of day.  Or if you just want a nice evenly lit photograph…shade is your friend.

Another “version” of open shade would be an overcast day.  That’s pretty much the same thing as a giant soft box for the sun.  The light is diffused and you get a nice even look to your photos.

While nice diffused light can be great, I like to find directional light that I can play with.  Something to make the photo a little more interesting.  Sometimes it can be hard to get sunlight to do exactly what you want but if you practice I promise it can be your best friend.  Here are some examples of how I like to play with sunlight.

Backlight

This is pretty self-explanatory.  This is just light hitting the back of your subjects.  It makes this yummy ring light around their heads and really gives dimension to the photograph.  This is my personal favorite.

Lens Flare

Sometimes when you are working with backlight you can get a variety of different lens flares.  When you shoot directly into the sun it can cause a flare or haze in your image.  This is totally a style preference, but I personally love it.  Lens flares are hard to predict but can make for some really cool results.

Directional Lighting

Sometimes when you’re shooting you don’t always have the luxury of the sun being the perfect angle in the sky…or the weather even cooperating at all.  So you have to be able to find ways to use the light you have the best way possible.  Directional lighting is a great way to do that.  Finding a window light or natural reflector can really give your image some dimension.  Having the light behind them or diffused on their face can be lovely but when it hits them at an angle it gives you an entirely different look.  Here’s what I mean…

Hopefully this helps understand the different ways to use natural light.  It’s important to understand how to control the light you’re given but also to create your own style with it.  I, obviously, don’t know everything and I honestly do learn something new every time I shoot.  I am no expert.  But these are a few things that I find helpful.

As wedding photographers…natural light is only half the battle.  We have flashes and off-camera flashes and dark receptions to worry about.  If you are like me…and are always trying to find ways to make your reception shots the best they can be…then here’s a little treat for you.  Justin and Mary Marantz are coming to Chicago on August 29th for their Lighting Intensive Workshop which covers all of the above.  And they were so nice and generous to offer you all $50 off your seat!! Just use the code laurenwakefield50 and sign up asap!!!!  You won’t regret it!!

I was going to start this post with something very eloquent and talk all about how completely in love Catherine and Alex are…but instead I just have to talk about the puppy.  I mean…look at that face.  Is he not the cutest little thing?  He just trotted alongside us all day.  And any time we didn’t want him in a shot…we would tie him up and he just couldn’t stand it.  He NEEDED to be close to mom and dad.  And not just close…on top of.  Reminded me of another puppy I know.  🙂  There’s no doubt that he was the star of Michigan Avenue…and completely stole the show.  As if Alex and Catherine weren’t cute enough on their own…throw this little guy in and it’s a full on cuteness melt down.  But I’ll just let you see for yourself…

Somehow…I thought it would be a good idea to work out the morning before a wedding.  And not just work out…box.  You know…I thought it would get me all amped up and ready to kick some butt at the wedding.  Well it turns out…it just makes for some serious back pain.  Ouch!  But all the back pain in the world was worth being there to capture Gesi and Leo’s big day.  I’m not a cryer but I may have teared up from time to time.  I’m just going to leave you with a few teasers…but I seriously cannot wait to show you the rest.  Seriously.
