Wedding festivities are in full effect!  We got to Switzerland on Wednesday and spent most of the day yesterday exploring mountains above the clouds.  It was definitely one of the coolest places I’ve ever been.  We explored…did some engagement photos…and ended the night with a traditional Swiss meal.  Can I get a high five for some fondue!!!!  Mmmmmm….

I’m off to do some wedding prep and get ready for the big day tomorrow.  But in the meantime, I wanted to leave you with a little peek of some engagement goodness.  Switzerland has definitely stolen my heart…

    Dear Lauren,
It was so nice to spend 4 days with you in Switzerland. You are an amazing photographer and your energy and joy for life is contagious. Thank you for all the love you put into making Jaime and Flo’s wedding so special. I can not wait to see the pics!!

It was an arctic tundra in Chicago that day.  The sun was buried beneath an abyss of clouds and it’s warmth was nowhere in sight.  The drizzly snow/rain mixed with huge gusts of wind felt like little ice chards stabbing you in your fingertips.  It was miserable…to say the least.

But wind, snow and bitterness aside…Kristin and Will made magic happen.  They snuggled a little closer and squeezed a little tighter and proved exactly why they are such a great couple.  Just watching them interact in those frigid temperatures…always smiling, always laughing…made me realize just how perfect they are for each other.  They have this love for life and what they do…and most importantly for each other…that is literally undeniable.  I left that frigid morning with a smile on my face because Kristin and Will are the type of people I am so lucky to have in my life.  The type of people that make you walk away feeling better than when you came…and make me so grateful to do what I do.

If there is one thing I could improve about myself…other than my excessive addiction to all thing chocolate…wait, I wouldn’t change that.  I digress…anyways…it would be the amount I read.  It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading.  Because I really do love it.  I read the entire Twilight series in five days.  Don’t even ask…obsessed doesn’t even cover the level where I was.  It was intense.

Moving on…I literally have a shelf full of books that have been collecting dust for years now.  Horrible I know.  I hear people talk about how great these books are and I want in on it but as I sit down to read my mind wanders.  It’s like my eyes are reading but my brain is thinking about everything else imaginable.  I think this says a lot more about me as a person…but it is something that I desperately want to work on.

So I came up with an idea.  I’ve always loved the idea of a book club.  A place to get together with your girlfriends and drink too much wine talk about books.  But with my crazy schedule I can never commit to an actual in-person get together.  So…I decided a blog book club is the perfect answer!  For all the other not-so-great readers out there…we can hold each other accountable and actually read those books that have been calling our names for way too long.  Every month I will post a book and that gives us four weeks to read it…then report back and discuss.  And maybe drink a little wine, too. 🙂  What do you think??

This month…I’m already 20 pages into You Are Here and I am loving it.  When I was at What If, Jonas and Natalie both raved about this book and I decided to give it a shot.  So far what I can tell you is it’s all about living present and being present.  In a world of distractions and clutter (where I can’t even focus on a book while I’m reading it)…so far this book is just what I need.  The best part…it’s short and cheap!  So no excuses!!!

Go pick it up and we’ll chat in a month about all it’s goodness.  The LWP book club is officially in full effect!  Woo!

You are here, being present, living in the present, lwp book club, book clubs, online book clubs

YES!!! Super excited about this!!! I’m already quite a few pages in too so this is perfect for this month. YAY!! And now I’ll actually read and be accountable for it too! (Because did you see my last post where I admitted I never/rarely ever finish books? I have 2-3 started at the same time always and leave them halfway in. This will make me finish!!) Okay – so what date do we have to be done by for this month?!ReplyCancel

    • laurenwakefield - March 18, 2013 - 1:22 pm

Perfect! Yay! Have this book read by April 18th. You can do it! And I am the same way. I start them and NEVER finish them. Not this month!!!!ReplyCancel

  • […]  And worst of all…I start books and don’t finish them.  Kind of like I started this blog bookclub and then never followed through.  Full disclosure…I couldn’t get into You Are Here. […]ReplyCancel

I pulled up to the building where we had planned to meet.  A huge field of freshly blanketed snow separated my parking spot and the vine covered, brick building.  I truly believe there is nothing like the lakefront in the winter.  It looks so peaceful and almost makes you feel like you are somewhere else all together.  I looked across the field waiting for Ellen and Dan to appear.  As I watched the sun slowly melt the winter wonderland…I started to notice a phenomenon.  Cross country skiers.  Lots of them!  In Chicago!!!  It was like these people were just out enjoying their Wednesday afternoon pastime…which was skiing.  And in case you forgot…IN CHICAGO.  I couldn’t help but giggle because well…it was maybe the most random thing I had ever seen.

As I met up with Ellen and Dan…we all got a good laugh at this hidden part of Chicago we had never seen before.  But our giggles quickly turned into an afternoon of photo goodness.  These two…what can I say.  They are naturals in front of the camera and kept a smile plastered on my face the whole time.  Their love is playful and so sincere…which if you ask me…is a great combination.  I couldn’t have asked for a better couple to kick off my 2013 season.  Ellen and Dan…I <3 you guys.  I seriously can’t wait for your wedding…we’re going to have a blast!  🙂

I LOVE these. There’s something so sweet about a winter engagement session.ReplyCancel

There’s no question about it…we live in a world of instant gratification.  We want what we want and we want it now.  We have everything at our fingertips any time we want it.  We can stream it…download it…and if it takes longer than a few seconds we are moving on to the next thing.  The days of dial-up and snail mail are over and people are living in an instant culture.

As wedding photographers, we have to keep up with how fast paced the world has become.  It is no longer acceptable to take 3-4 months to deliver wedding photos.  Same day slideshows and one week turn around times are quickly becoming the norm.  In this business, taking to long to do anything can quickly become your demise.  But one of the trickiest things I think we face is email response time.  There is a very specific window in which we have to respond before we become old news.  But at the same time, it is all too common to feel like we are married to our emails because we don’t want to leave an inquiry sitting unanswered for too long.  So where is the balance?  That is a question that I still struggle with…but have tried my best to navigate a system that works for me.

Respond within 12 hours

It’s easy to think as soon as an inquiry comes it has to be responded to immediately.  I mean, after all, this is our livelihood so we want to be as on top of it as possible.  If I receive an inquiry during the work day…I always make it a rule to respond by the end of that day.  For instance, if an email comes in at 11am…I make sure I respond by the time I wrap up for the day around 4 or 5pm.  If I receive an inquiry in the evening, I use the 12 hour rule.  I give myself 12 hours to respond which more than likely will get me to the morning of the next work day. I do my best to be present in the evenings and not constantly be checking my phone…so if I give myself this timeline is helps me stick to that.  I know, if I send an email to anyone…whether it be a business or friend…I want an immediate response.  And if not immediate, in a short amount of time.  So why would I give my wedding couples anything less?

Email templates

When I first started, I had the hardest time responding to emails.  I knew what I wanted to say but I couldn’t turn that into an email.  I would write emails ten times before sending them and that process repeated after every single inquiry that came in.  It was awful.  Enter the email template.  I realized that I was writing the same basic information over and over again and it was adding extra stress and time to my day that I just didn’t need.  So I created an inquiry email template.  It is just a basic shell for me to use when responding to potential brides.  I still personalize every email but the basic information is there and saves me SO much time.  Here is an example of my inquiry template:

Hey (bride’s name)!

Thank you so much for contacting me!  I’m so glad (insert name) referred you to me!  I love love her!!  🙂

I checked and I do have your date open!  Yay!!!  Tell me more about your wedding.  What are you looking for in your wedding photography?

I’ve attached my investment guide for you to take a look at.  I do all my packages a la carte since every couple and wedding day are so unique. This way you can put together the package that is perfect for you.  Look it over and let me know if you have any questions at all.   I’d also love to get together for a drink and chat wedding stuff!  I love hearing about all the little details.  🙂 Let me know when works for you!

I can’t wait to meet you!

Talk to you soon,

Lauren

More often than not the bride has given me some sort of personal information in her initial inquiry so I can add in some things that are specific to her…talking about her venue, favorite Starbucks drink, etc.  This has saved me hours and hours of time and I still kick myself for taking so long to implement this system.

I know how hard it can be to disconnect ourselves from our businesses.  But sometimes, a simple system can make this part of life a lot more manageable.

And in the spirit of disconnecting…here’s a little view from my office this week.  Where the 12 hour rule is in full effect.  🙂

SO SMART! It took me a while to implement the 12 hour rule – but now I definitely wait until the next morning if I get an email after 7pm. It’s important to live our lives too! Great post L! Enjoy your ‘office’ time this week! 😉ReplyCancel
