I don’t know if it was her extreme love for country music or her Long Island accent but I liked Kate the second I met her.  She’s hilarious and makes you feel like you’ve been friends forever.  From the first time we met I knew we were going to fit perfectly as friends.

I had heard her talk about this Sean fellow.  At the time he wasn’t living in Chicago so all I had to go on was the way she talked about him.  Every time she brought him up her face lit up and she couldn’t hold back the world’s biggest smile.  I didn’t know much about this guy…but I could tell by looking at her that he makes her happy.  And not just the kind of happy you get when you find an extra dollar in your coat pocket.  I mean that deep down, can’t live without you, fiery kind of happiness.  And that was good enough for me.

When I finally got to meet Sean…it was at a country bar.  Which is like Kate and I’s homeland.  Obviously.  We spent the night singing country songs at the top of our lungs and Sean just laughed.  Only making fun of us a few times.  😉  But whenever I looked up his eyes were on Kate…with that same smile.  And that same happiness that is constantly beaming out of her.  And as Alan Jackson lyrics floated through the air…I knew they were made for each other.

So internet…meet my country music loving,  incredibly in love, perfect for each other friends…Kate and Sean.

It’s easy to look at a wedding day and see the little things.  The flowers and dress.  Perfectly placed hair and matching robes.  Chicken or steak.  To see all the little details that bring a day together so seamlessly.  The details that take months of planning…and deserve a little bit of attention.  But I think it’s also easy to look at a wedding day and miss the most important thing that’s happening right in front of you.  Two people who are starting the rest of their lives together.

Megan and Jeremiah’s wedding was nothing short of perfect.  From the flowers to the horses to the little white church.  It was nothing short of amazing.  Every detail was thought about and perfectly placed throughout their day.  But when I think back to their wedding day…those are the last things I think about.

I think about a couple who fit so perfectly together that I don’t know how they could have ever been apart.  I think about the way Jeremiah looked at Megan when he saw her for the first time.  Like for a split second he honestly couldn’t breath.  I think about their vows…and how personal and true they were.  But most of all I stop and smile just knowing that these two get to spend forever together.  That somehow in this crazy life they found each other…and I know they are never letting each other go.

Megan and Jeremiah…you’re love for each other is truly beautiful.  Being around you guys makes remember why I love what I do so much.  And makes me want to hug Gary a little tighter.  🙂  I know you’re life is going to be everything you’ve ever wanted it to be.  And I can’t wait to drink wine and play Banagrams together.  I love you guys to death!!!!

A HUGE thanks to Amanda Miller for driving out to Galena with me and being the best second shooter ever!!!!!!

Also a big thanks to all the people that made this day possible:

A few months ago I sat at a diner with two of my favorite people…sipping mimosas and dreaming big.  We had this crazy idea and without knowing where it would lead…we took a leap.  We sat there for hours…pouring our hearts into this dream that today…becomes a reality.

Christy, Jessica and I have spent the last few months turning this dream of a collaborative place for photographers to learn into a retreat that is so much more than I could have ever imagined.  We are three pieces cut from different pies but together, we fit perfectly.  I am beyond excited about how everything has come together…and I really feel like when the three of us laid out this plan…magic happened.  Something clicked and the Turning Tides retreat was born.

So what exactly is this crazy idea I keep talking about?  Turning tides is a retreat for photographers to come together, connect and learn.  From each other and with each other.  It’s three days to get away and really dig into what it is you want out of this life.  But most of all this retreat is about you.  It’s about your dreams.  Your fears.  That thing in the pit of your stomach that tells you to dream…and dream big.  Christy, Jessica and I will be there to share what we’ve learned along the way and help you in every way we can.  From morning coffee to late night conversations…it’s the experience that really makes this retreat special.

This blog post is one of my biggest dreams becoming a  reality.  And more than anything…I want you to be a part of it with me.  From now until Sunday we are running an early bird special for $100 off your seat!!!! Head on over to the site to check it out and sign up!!!!  🙂

From the bottom of my heart…to every person who reads this blog…thank you for pushing me to be better.  And to go after the things that scare me the most.

And of course an enormous thank you to Evan Hunt for our photos.  We couldn’t love them more.

Flo and Jaime.  Where do I even start?  I’ve known Jaime for several years now and she is one of the kindest people I have ever met.  Someone who fills you up and makes you feel better just being around her.  She truly cares about the people in her life and will do anything to show it.  She deserves so much happiness in this world and seconds after meeting Flo, I knew he was the one who could give it to her.

Flo and Jaime met in New York City.  Flo was there studying English and Jaime had moved there from Chicago for work.  By some crazy twist of fate…they happened to cross paths at the top of the Empire Hotel.  They danced the night away and spent as much time as they could together until Flo had to go back to Switzerland.  A lot of ‘I miss you’s, a year and a half and 85,000 miles later…they were officially engaged.  Their storybook romance found a home in London…where they could FINALLY be together.  Forever.

Spending a few days with Flo and Jaime just proved even more why they are so perfect for each other.  Watching Flo look at her with this smile that screams…I love you more than anyone in the world.  And I don’t ever want to live without you.  The way he looks at her literally melts your heart.  Always like he is seeing her for the first time.  And watching Jaime light up whenever he is around.  There is nothing better.  She literally glows.  Something about the two of them together just makes you believe….even more…in the power of love.  I watch them living this life that is so far from what either of them imagined…but the only life that makes sense.  Because it’s a life they get to live hand in hand.  Fate brought them together.  And as I watched them, arm in arm, proclaim their love for each other…I knew they were exactly where they were supposed to be.

Jaime and Flo…I will never be able to put into words how thankful I am to have been a part of your perfect day.  You two mean the world to me and I know your life is going to be filled with so much happiness.  Thank you so much for making my dreams come true.  I left a little piece of my heart in Basel…and I can’t wait to come back one day.  I love you guys to death.  See you in Detroit!!!

**Lots of photos alert!  I just couldn’t chose. :)**

Jaime…you are stunning!

Jaime’s niece, Natalie, started crying during the ceremony.  Because she was happy.  I almost died.

Jaime surprised Flo by reading her vows in Swiss German…which she does not speak.  Flo loved it…as you can tell by his face.

Flo’s dad owns a Music store where they hand make piccolos   He showed off his talents during the cocktail hour.

Everyone tied a wish for Jaime and Flo to the end of a heart balloon and let it go over the Rhine.  It was so beautiful.

And they lived happily ever after…

A HUMUNGOUS thanks to my bestie, Sid, for flying around the world with me and helping me shoot this perfect wedding.  You’re the best muffin…I hope the adventure always continues.

When they said we were going to the top of a mountain, I envisioned a nice little ledge overlooking a scenic backdrop.  You know…paved sidewalks and safe spots to stand and stare out into the mountainous abyss. We started in a little tram car that slowly carried us up into the sky.  The incline in which this car travels is quite frightening.  When we got to the top it was epic.  That’s the best word I can come up with.  We literally found ourselves above the clouds…overlooking the most amazing view I think I’ve ever seen.  Snow covered mountains for as far as you could see.  Peeking above the clouds for miles and miles.  It was so peaceful and serene.

The top was what I imagined.  Paved walkways with shoveled snow.  Seeing as I wore the furthest thing from snow shoes…I was a happy camper.  The plan was to take a few engagement photos up here so I grabbed Jaime because my photography brain was about to explode.  We took a couple on the safety of that nice walkway…and then she pointed to the real top of the mountain.  The part that you can only get to by climbing up this snowy, very steep, slope.  I started to walk and since my boots had basically as much traction as a hard wood floor…I slipped at every step.  Let me visualize this for you.  My camera in one hand…feet slipping around like I was attempting some uphill ski trick.  It was not pretty.  I looked at the ‘real’ top of the mountain and laughed.  There was no way I was getting up there.  At least not with a functional camera and two working legs.  Apparently my struggle wasn’t so subtle because the next thing I knew Flo and Jaime were next to me and literally carrying me up the mountain.  Hand in hand all three of us made it up in on piece.  Normally I would have been embarrassed because of course I was the one who couldn’t make it up on my own.  But I couldn’t help but love everything about that moment.

Sure…I probably looked like some crazy city girl…but the three of us making it to the top pretty much summed up my whole trip to Switzerland.  From the second I got there to the second I left…I felt like family.  And ultimately made for a trip I will never forget.  As I sit here sipping my coffee out of my Basel mug…I miss that slippery mountain.  And most of all I miss Jaime and Flo.  Because they are the type of people that infect you with their love and happiness.  And the type of people I feel honored to call friends.

We started on the boat ride in Lucerne to the bottom of the mountain.  It was foggy so you can’t really tell but we were completely surrounded by mountains.

Then we made it to the top of the mountain for some more photo goodness…

And finally…at the ‘real’ top of the mountain.  All in one piece!

And we ended it out back in Lucerne.  Seriously one of the best days I’ve ever had.

Stay tuned for Jaime and Flo’s wedding!  I can’t even put into words how perfect their day was…but I promise I’ll try.
