I feel like I should stand up on a pedestal and repeatedly pat myself on my back because I actually finished both books!!!!  I mean…I knew I would finish Gone Girl…but like I said…I start business books and then I usually lose interest about half way through.  This system is magical because it’s like I get a prize for finishing a business book!!!  It’s genius…if I don’t say so myself.  🙂

So here’s a little look back at last month’s books:

The Strengthsfinder – This was surprisingly enlightening.  Basically…the concept is that you should focus on your strengths instead of trying to make up for your weaknesses.  If you are a seven at shooting and only a two at accounting and you work as hard as you possibly can to double your skill…you’ll still only going to be a four at accounting.  But you would be a 14 at shooting!    There is an assessment you take online which gives you your top five strengths.  Then you know where to focus your energy instead of wasting it on areas you most likely would never excel in.  It’s pretty interesting and I highly recommend it.

Gone Girl – Oh man!  Loved this book.  I usually fly through books in a matter of days and I realized it’s because I am reading things like The Hunger Games and 50 shades where the writing is…well…less than amazing.  But this book I had to slow down and really focus on every single thing that was happening and I was completely enthralled the entire time.  I just finished it a few days ago so I’m still not sure how I feel about the ending…but regardless the book was amazing.  So creatively written and I am so excited for the movie it’s not even funny.  Ben Affleck and Reese Witherspoon….yes please!

So now on to this month’s books.

Business: The Total Money Makeover – I figured I would try to stay somewhat relevant to my life when picking business books.  After Christy’s budget talk at Turning Tides and all this fun wedding planning in my future my brain is all things money and budgets right now.  Plus…with the looming off season not too far away I figured this would be the perfect book.

Fiction: The Art of Racing in the Rain – I have to be honest…I don’t know a ton about this book.  Except that it is made for dog people…and I’m a dog person.  My best friend, Sid, recommended it and said it was a must-read.  I normally don’t read dog books because they inevitably die in the end but she swears by it.  From my understanding, the story is about a family and their dog…written through the dog’s perspective.  Get the tissues ready.

For those of you who are reading along…what did you think?  Did you read last month’s books?  Or just one?  Are you excited about this month’s books?  Since this is a virtual bookclub and bookclubs don’t count unless there’s wine involved…grab a glass of wine and let me know your thoughts.  It will feel like the real thing I promise. 🙂

Good picks! I loved Gone Girl too, and I know you will also love The Art of Racing in the Rain. Sid is right–it’s a must-read 🙂ReplyCancel

I loved the Art of Racing in the Rain…. you will need a box of tissues for sure. I have tried to read gone girl seriously like 13 times. I can never seem to get into it. I was totally obsessed with the hunger games and fifty shades…maybe i should stick with the less sophisticated. lolReplyCancel

I had sort of neglected my email all week.  I wanted to be present with the girls and honestly…there was just not time.  On the last day as everyone was packing up their bags I opened my laptop to maybe just answer a quick few.  I immediately heard the ding that told me someone was IMing me.  I looked down at a message from me brother that read:

“So…did you turn the tides?”

While I know he was being an a**hole big brother…the answer is yes Josh.  Yes…we did turn the tides.  And it was awesome.

Last week has been really challenging to wrap my head around.  It might have something to do with the fact I got engaged as soon as I got home but on top of that…it was so amazing on so many levels I’m not really sure where to start.  Going into the week I was nervous…really nervous.  Even on the drive up to Michigan my stomach was basically in my throat.  Then we walked in the door of this amazing lakehouse.  The kind of house that you can’t help but relax in.  And I was calm.  Ok…not totally calm.  But in comparison I was much calmer than I had been.  As the girls started to show up I began to realize that everything I had worried/stressed/freaked out about was happening whether I liked it or not.

As the week unfolded…it turned into more than I could have ever imagined.  Those nine girls poured their hearts and souls out…and trusted us to do the same.  There were tears…lots of tears…but there was also laughter and s’mores and boat rides and late night campfires.  Those talks that I had worked so hard on for weeks…were such a small part of it all (which came together great if you were wondering…well at I least I think).  I look back at what I thought that week was going to be like and I was so wrong.  I know every girl there took away the bullet points that we had each so carefully placed in our slides.   But more than that they took away an experience.  They took away new friends.  New best friends.  And they left that house different than when they walked in.  And if you ask me…that is turning the tides.  So take that Josh.

People keep asking me how it went.  They want to hear all about it.  And every time I go to say the words they just don’t come out.  Because the truth is…it went exactly how it was supposed to.  Exactly how it was meant to.  We knew going into this that everything about this week was going to unexpected.  Unplanned.  And that every person in that house would make it what it was.  And that is exactly what happened.

To all the girls who came across the country (and Canada!) to be with us…thank you from the bottom of my heart.  You guys made last week everything it was and I can’t wait to see what’s next for you.

Until next year…

When you’re a photographer…rain can be your worst enemy.  You watch the weather like it’s a some epic action movie… just waiting for that chance of precipitation to go from 51% to 49%.  Pacing around the house…watching the clouds.  Deciding if you should make the call or wait it out.  It’s endless torture.  When Hillary, Casey and I first scheduled their photos…the rain was not on our side.  All day the sky was full of impending doom and may radar app was getting it’s 99 cents worth.  It was sprinkling a little but we decided to chance it.  Maybe…just maybe mother nature would be on our side.

The drive to Lincoln Park looked promising.  No rain.  And the sky was looking a little brighter.  As soon as we met up….I mean the second they walked up…it started raining.  First a drizzle.  Then a sprinkle.  Then a full on downpour.  So we stood there…sad faced…flipping through our calendars accepting mother nature’s defeat.

While that evening wasn’t ideal.  Our second try ended up to be the perfect Chicago summer night.  Not too hot.  Not too cold.  Just perfect.  So while rain and I may be arch enemies…I guess good things come to those who wait.

Awwwwww! These are just too cute!! You did a great job capturing how lovely these two people are. I feel so lucky to be related to them – 🙂ReplyCancel

I got off the elevator looking for a sign that pointed to the Presidential Suite.  All I saw were numbers on the wall so I stood there for a second deciding what to do.  Call…go back to the lobby and ask…start knocking on doors?  Then I heard some noises from down the hallway and I started walking that way.  I heard laughter and giggles.  The unmistakable sound of girls getting ready for a wedding.

When I walked in the door I was greeted with smiling faces from every direction.  Everyone was beaming…including Liz.  I can’t put my finger on it…but something about Liz makes me feel so connected to her.  Maybe it’s her warm personality.  Or her background in Showchoir (yes we considered putting our dresses on and having a dance-off).  I think on some level she reminds me of myself.  And when I see the way she loves Steve…it reminds me a lot of Gary.  They are just two people who fit effortlessly together.  Like they’ve always belonged side by side…and nothing in the world will ever tear them apart.  Steve is strong and stoic…yet is Liz’s soft spot to land.  And she is kind and generous…and loves Steve with 100% of herself.
Their wedding day was full of tears and love and everything exactly the way it should be.  I don’t know what it was…but watching them say ‘I Do’ just felt right.  And every person in that room knew it.
Liz and Steve…I am sure right now you are sipping a tropical drink with an umbrella in it with your toes in the sand (which makes me very jealous) but I hope you get a second to relive your day.  I love you guys to death and know there are a lot of double dates in the future for us.  Liz…we will make Steve and Gary best friends if it’s the last thing we do.  I wish you guys all the happiness in the world!
